MetaMetrics continues to innovate and find new applications for their Lexile Framework for Reading and Quantile Framework for Math, including connecting academics with career planning and developing growth models to show learners their potential growth paths. MetaMetrics utilizes a wide array of expertise in these efforts – from psychometrics, content development and machine learning/AI.

 Opportunity

Reporting to the CEO the Chief Academic Officer will be central to MetaMetrics strategic development, collaborating across the organization to create new opportunities, define and lead the company’s academic vision, ensuring alignment with evolving learning science and pedagogy, and strengthen the ability to adapt to the ever-changing educational landscape, meeting both current and future needs.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Protect and defend the MetaMetrics brand and intellectual property
  • Oversee the design and validation of learning frameworks, assessment models, and adaptive algorithms (e.g., Lexile, Quantile, or equivalent systems)
  • Mentor and lead a team of test development specialists, psychometricians, and educational researchers
  • Develop new strategies to increase growth and impact for the Lexile and Quantile measures, including expanding into new market segments
  • Leverage AI technologies to advance the value and benefits of MetaMetrics’ solutions and create internal efficiencies
  • Direct efficacy studies, psychometric validation, and longitudinal learning impact analyses and serve as the chief spokesperson for the company’s academic credibility in public forums, research communities, and policy discussions
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Sales to position products credibly and effectively in academic and institutional markets
  • Publish and present thought leadership in education research, learning analytics, and assessment design

 Ideal Candidate

You have deep technical knowledge of psychometrics and current assessment trends in education, and can convey your technical knowledge to non-technical, internal and external stakeholders. You have devised and guided improvements to assessment tools that build quality and value. You can inspire and nurture a passionate team, fostering an environment of continuous growth and innovation, as well as working with diverse stakeholders, sharing insights that shape strategic decisions.

You should have the following experiences and skill sets:

  • Recognized expertise in measurement, psychometrics, assessment validity/reliability, and research design
  • Expertise in identifying and pursuing adjacent market opportunities for expanding Lexile and Quantile measures
  • Possess research and product development skills to advance the core measurement capabilities
  • Demonstrated leadership in the design and development of research studies on educational assessment
  • Excellent communication and customer-facing skills to translate technical concepts for stakeholders
  • Passion for MetaMetrics’ mission and a desire to shape the future direction of the organization
  • Collaborative leadership style to work effectively across the executive team and organization
  • Doctorate (Ph.D. or Ed.D.) in either Education, Learning Sciences, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Measurement, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of progressive leadership in curriculum, assessment, or educational research—preferably within the EdTech sector.
  • Proven record of thought leadership (publications, conference presentations, or standards committees)
  • Experience working with state departments of education or large-scale assessment programs a plus.
